Benefit From Georgia Without Relocating Your Entire Life

Georgia offers low-tax business structures, multi-currency banking and, for qualifying investors, tax residency without living there. Much of it can be set up while you stay where you are, with Happy Georgia doing the work in Georgia under Power of Attorney. What works from abroad, and where a visit is needed.

You don't have to move to Georgia to use what it offers. A Georgian business registration, a 1% tax status for eligible solo professionals, multi-currency bank and brokerage accounts and, for qualifying investors, Georgian tax residency can all be arranged while you stay where you live and work today.

What makes that possible is Power of Attorney. You sign it once in your own country, and our team in Georgia carries out the registrations, applications and bank files on your behalf. Most of our clients never come to Georgia. This article maps what works from abroad, what depends on genuine activity in Georgia, and where a visit is required.

A Georgian business, set up from where you are#

We register your Individual Entrepreneur or LLC with the National Agency of Public Registry under your Power of Attorney, complete the tax registration and put your legal address in place. We guide you through the Power of Attorney, notarisation and apostille requirements in your country, then handle the Georgian registrations on your behalf.

After registration, our monthly accounting service files your Georgian tax declarations through delegated access to your Revenue Service account. The step-by-step sequence is in our guide to setting up a Georgian company without leaving home.

1% on eligible turnover as an Individual Entrepreneur#

For eligible freelancers, consultants and developers, an Individual Entrepreneur with Small Business Status can offer 1% tax on qualifying turnover up to GEL 500,000 annually.

Eligibility depends on your activity. Most independent professional work qualifies, but certain regulated professional services, financial services and most licensed activities are excluded, and we check your activity against the list before you commit. We prepare and file the status application for you and coordinate any required online interview.

Two points matter if you stay abroad. Registering an IE does not make you tax-resident in Georgia, and Georgia's 1% does not by itself settle what your country of residence taxes. We confirm how both apply to your case before you rely on the structure. The detail is in our article on Small Business Status.

Virtual Zone and International Company: you can stay abroad, the work happens in Georgia#

Virtual Zone status gives a Georgian LLC 0% corporate income tax on qualifying profit from software it creates for clients abroad, with 5% withholding on dividends. International Company status brings 5% profit tax on distributions, 0% dividend withholding and 5% tax on eligible salaries for qualifying IT and maritime businesses with the required experience in their activity.

Neither status comes with registering an LLC. Each is granted on application, and each depends on qualifying activity carried out in Georgia: for Virtual Zone, software development performed in Georgia; for International Company, real operating substance, with qualified staff and costs in Georgia. As the founder, you can live elsewhere. The qualifying work cannot. We assess whether your business meets the conditions, help put the Georgian operation in place and file the application under Power of Attorney.

Where neither status fits, an ordinary LLC may still be the right vehicle, and we recommend it case by case.

Banking and investing in Georgia from abroad#

We assist with Georgian personal, corporate and brokerage accounts, including applications under Power of Attorney where the institution permits. We match you with a suitable bank or broker and prepare the file its compliance team expects. Once an account is open, you operate it through online banking from anywhere.

Each bank makes its own decision, so approval is never automatic. Clear source-of-funds documents carry most of the weight. For a foreign-owned LLC, Georgian banks also require local substance before opening a corporate account: an office or co-working lease and at least one Georgian-paid employee. An IE does not need this.

A brokerage account gives multi-currency access to Georgian and international markets. Georgia generally does not tax individuals on gains from foreign securities, but if you remain tax-resident elsewhere, your home country's rules decide what you owe on them.

Tax residence and a residence permit are different things#

Georgian tax residency concerns how Georgia taxes you. A residence permit concerns your right to live in Georgia. Neither comes with a company registration.

High Net Worth tax residency. For qualifying individuals, Georgia grants tax residency without the usual 183 qualifying days in Georgia. The conditions are substantial: assets above GEL 3 million or annual income above GEL 200,000 over the previous three years, assets in Georgia worth at least USD 500,000, and at least GEL 25,000 of Georgian-source income in the previous tax year or a Georgian residence permit. Our HNW tax residency service files the application, the first certificate and every annual renewal under Power of Attorney. You don't travel to Georgia.

Residence permits. A residence permit is a separate immigration route, based on investment, property, work or IT activity. We prepare the file and submit it under Power of Attorney, but you need to be in Georgia on the filing date, and you apply for the residence card in person after the permit is granted. A residence permit cannot be completed without travelling to Georgia.

What stays with your home country#

Georgian registration, special tax status or Georgian tax residency does not end your obligations elsewhere. If you remain tax-resident in another country, it may tax your worldwide income, and some countries tax their citizens wherever they live. Reporting duties, rules on companies controlled from abroad and departure taxes are set by that country's law.

Georgia's double-tax treaty network may help: an applicable treaty or domestic rule may allow a foreign tax credit for Georgian tax. Whether it does depends on the treaty and on your country's law. Our cross-border planning review identifies the questions to confirm with an adviser in your country before you rely on any structure, and our tax consultation covers the Georgian side.

How Happy Georgia helps#

We look at where you live, what you do and what you want from Georgia, then recommend the structure that fits: an IE, an LLC with or without special status, Georgian banking and brokerage, HNW tax residency, or a residence permit. We tell you what we handle under Power of Attorney, what the bank or authority decides, and where a visit is required.
